Dental veneers are incredibly beneficial to our teeth. If you are self-conscious about your smile because of a tooth that is chipped, stained, or misshapen, dental veneers can cover up these imperfections. As Dr. Hymas has a wide variety of experience and has customized dental veneers to the highest quality, we can guarantee that your cosmetic goals are met. But when it comes to veneers they need to match the rest of your teeth, not stick out like a sore thumb. We consult with you to help you understand if veneers are the best option for your needs and work towards a solution that you can smile about.

Dental veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored materials that cover the front surface of a tooth by bonding them to the misshapen tooth. They can be made from porcelain or from resin, and each has its own benefits, depending on the teeth they are bonded to. Veneers are routinely used to fix discolored teeth, broken, worn down, uneven, or have gaps between them.

The procedure usually requires three trips to the dentist, including a consultation. During the initial appointment, we may take X-rays and or make impressions of your mouth and teeth to send to a dental laboratory to make your veneer. While we wait for the veneers to come back from the laboratory, we use temporary veneers, which you will wear between two and four weeks.

When it’s time to bond the veneer onto your tooth, we will examine its fit and color by removing and trimming it, so it fits perfectly before permanently cementing it to your tooth. The color is adjusted with shades of cement so it matches your teeth perfectly. Once the tooth is ready for the veneer, it is cleaned, polished, and etched to help the bonding process. Once the veneer is bonded, we remove excess cement, check your bite, and make additional adjustments if necessary. A follow-up visit may also be required.

Dental veneers are a fantastic option for many people because they provide a natural tooth appearance, they are stain-resistant, and can help your teeth appear whiter. They are also a very strong material, making for a quick and smooth process in the dentist’s chair. Veneers are a very long-lasting material and can last up to 15 years before being replaced. The cost depends on how much work you want, but is between $1,000 to $2,000 per tooth. However, this cost is not usually covered by insurance and you should check with your insurance company.

After the procedure, you don’t have to take any special precautions. As long as you follow good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, this should be fine. But you may want to reduce eating and drinking certain foods and drinks that stain, such as tea and coffee.

As with any dental procedure, there can be certain risks of having dental veneers, such as your tooth may become more sensitive to hot and cold foods or drinks. Veneers can dislodge, although this is rare, and is usually because of the individual putting too much pressure on their teeth, for example, by biting their nails or chewing on hard objects. As such, it’s important to maintain a healthy standard of oral hygiene, especially as people with unhealthy teeth may not benefit from veneers.
