Your smile can’t survive if you don’t have good oral hygiene. In fact, if you forget to floss or brush, if you eat and drink tooth-harming products, or if you use the wrong oral hygiene tools, your teeth and gums can suffer the consequences. This is why our dentist, Dr. Chet Hymas, encourages you to do all you can to have the best oral hygiene possible. To help you do so, he has some tips and recommendations.

First, make sure to brush twice a day and floss once a day. As you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. As you floss, use a product that is easy to use and one that will effectively remove the plaque from between your teeth. No matter which toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss you use, it’s best if they have been approved by the American Dental Association. It’s also vital to visit your dentist every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam.

Second, make sure to have a healthy and balanced diet. This means you need to avoid smile-harming foods and drinks (sugary and acidic products) and consume more tooth-healthy foods and drinks (like dairy products, water, milk, fruits, and vegetables). You should also avoid snacking as much as possible.

Third, make sure to use fluoride dental products. Fluoride can seep into your tooth enamel and strengthen it, giving it the ability to fight dental issues. So, make sure you brush with fluoride toothpaste and also rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash when you can. You can also take fluoride supplements if needed.
