Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Did you know that it is considered normal to stop breathing up to 5 times/hour while you sleep? However, If you stop breathing over 5 times/hour, you may have what is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
OSA is a chronic sleep disorder that causes people to momentarily stop breathing several times throughout their sleep cycle. Indications of this condition may include chronic fatigue, snoring, and hypertension.
Why is my dentist talking to me about my sleep?
Many early signs and symptoms of OSA manifest themselves in your dentition and oral cavity. It can be a major contributing factor in recession, periodontal disease, and inflammation. Your dental team at Hymas Family Dental has taken many course hours to aid us in screening your airway. We offer the latest technology, called ECCOVISION, that uses sound waves to map both your nasal and oral airways. 90% of those suffering from OSA don’t even know it!
Snoring
Snoring is a partial airway obstruction that reduces airflow but does not cause arousal from sleep, however snoring is not benign. Snoring causes vibrations that can contribute to the breakdown of the endothelial lining of the carotid artery.
At Hymas Family Dental we are committed to providing comprehensive dental care as well as discussing our patient’s general health. We know that there are many health problems that can arise from untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Some of them include stroke, high blood pressure, headaches, diabetes, depression, mood swings, heart failure, ADHD that becomes worse, excessive wear of oral dentition, increased inflammation, and an overall lack of well-being.
Early Stages of OSA
In its early stages, OSA may not cause visible symptoms, but it may cause remarkable damage without prompt and effective treatment.

- Apnea is a cessation of airflow of 10 seconds or more
- Hypopnea may also occur and it is at least a 30% decrease in airflow lasting 10 seconds or greater with oxygen desaturations greater than or equal to 4%
